I thought that a guide is there to explain more than what is written and to answer questions from visitors. Well I was wondering why she is a guide, if I can read any information. I asked her about an explanation that she made in French about where the spices come from and she said to me that I could read that information in the description of every spice. I can understand french (as I speak a bit and my mother tongue is Spanish), I noticed that Samantha was giving quite more information in French than in English, what I consider as not professional guide in a touristic attraction like this. I visited this palace together with someone who doesn’t speak neither understand french, and we were the only 2 people who said to the guide, Samantha, that we don’t speak French. So if in Rouen this cathedral is a must see Words truly do not describe this cathedral and I could go on and on about the stained glass windowsīut one thing I must mention is don't miss the 15th century stone staircase. My reason for my venture inside was to see Saint Jeanne of arc as Rouen is steeped in her historyīut many other saints are prominent inside Inside it has a number of chapels and tributes to various saints Please doĪs this helps preserve this truly important It's open to the public and free of charge to go inside and look around or pray if you wantīut it does kindly ask for a voluntary donation. I'm not religious but you really don't have to be to admire and be in awe of this truly beautiful cathedral Got to admire the detail and pure talent of the stone masons On the square in front of it, by the right tower is a plaque signing the place from where the famous impressionist Monet painted many paintings of the Cathedral in various weather conditions and different times of year.Īnother spot of his from where he painted, as well a beautiful place to capture the entire Rouen panorama is Cote Saint Catherine (see that review), from where you can clearly see how this Cathedral dominates the city.Ībsolutely stunning cathedral amazing stone decorations/carvings on the outside and the inside of the building The interiors are pretty much the same as many others in this part of France with huge tall Gothic arches, fantastic stained glass and rose window. It's grandeur is overwhelming compared to Rouen size which is in fact a small city. The facade is simply astonishing being the one of the best I've ever seen, and I saw hundreds of them all over the world. Therefore, you can spot very different architecture styles best seen in its three towers each in different style - Gothic, Flamboyant and Renaissance. This Cathedral is an amazing piece of art built and rebuilt over eight centuries from 8th to 16th century, with an earlier one standing there as early as 4c. Other then the negatives, I would visit again and allow myself more time to explore. One rule for all not just for us!! I’m not an anti masker, I forgot it. Also the amount of distance you have to walk just to get to a toilet! Also the rudeness of some of the staff here is a disgrace! The woman in the shop next to the war tunnels has a bad attitude and would not show my daughter where the magnets were when asked! I wasn’t allowed in the shop due to not having my mask and she couldn’t even be polite about that! Also, if you’re going to enforce mask wearing then at least tell your staff to put their masks right over their face instead of just under their noses. Negative points for me is the bad signage and the lack of information boards to tell you what things are. Picnic is probably a better option if there a few of you. Cafe serves half decent food but overpriced as always at these places. Tunnels are fab and views from the top of the tower are great. A massive place, so allow I’d say half a day of not all of it to visit.
